Why SAPS sends applications back, and how to avoid it
Most packs that come back are not refused. They are sent back for paperwork, and every one of those reasons can be avoided before you get to the counter.
The reasons we see most
- The wrong form or the wrong edition. A new licence goes on the SAPS 271, a renewal on the SAPS 518(a), a competency renewal on the SAPS 517(g). The SAPS 271 also exists in two editions with different layouts.
- Empty boxes. A question left blank, a box that needed a tick, a date missing next to a signature.
- Missing documents. Certified ID, proof of address, competency, photos, the safe certificate. On a renewal of several firearms, many DFOs want an annexure and a safe certificate for each one.
- A motivation that argues the wrong thing. A Section 15 or 16 letter that mentions self-defence, or a Section 13 letter with no real reason.
- No proof behind the reason. Hunting or sport needs proof of activity: your association membership, and for sport, a range register or targets.
- The competency was forgotten. It expires with the licence and must be renewed with it.
Check it like a DFO before you go
Read every page as the DFO will: every box, every signature, every document in the order on the checklist. Our packs are checked page by page this way before you print them.
