Why use an approved agent?
An agent is a firearm business in your own area: a gun shop, range, training provider or security company. You sit down with someone who knows firearms, and they prepare your application with the same system we use, so the forms, the motivation letter and the checklist are complete and consistent.
No agent near you? You can prepare the same application yourself online: start here.
What to take to your agent
Your agent builds the application from your details, so the visit goes faster when you bring:
- Your green barcoded ID book or smart ID card
- Your competency certificate, or the Statement of Results from your training if the competency is still to be applied for
- For a renewal: your current firearm licence card
- For a new licence: the dealer's details and the firearm's make, calibre and serial number
- Proof of address that is not older than three months
- Details of your safe: where it is installed and how it is fixed
- Any club or association membership certificates (dedicated status, hunting or sport shooting)
The agent prepares the SAPS forms, the motivation letter and a checklist for your exact situation. You check everything, sign where needed and hand it in at your SAPS designated firearms office.
Agents are independent businesses. They set their own fees and deal with their clients directly. Only SAPS decides on an application.
