How to renew a firearm licence in South Africa
Every firearm licence in South Africa expires. Renewing is not automatic and nobody reminds you — the responsibility sits with you, and missing the date has consequences far worse than a late fee.
The one date that matters: 90 days before expiry
Section 24 of the Firearms Control Act requires you to apply for renewal at least 90 days before your licence expires. That is not a guideline or a grace period — it is the statutory deadline, and SAPS applies it.
Look at the white card for your firearm. The expiry date is printed on it. Count back 90 days. That is the last day your renewal can be lodged on time.
Start earlier than 90 days
Ninety days is the deadline, not the plan. Before you can lodge, you may need to renew your competency first, get a fresh set of documents certified, and get an appointment with your Designated Firearm Officer. Six months out is comfortable. Four months out is when we send our reminder.
How long is my licence valid?
It depends on the section it was issued under. This is the single most common thing people get wrong, because they assume every licence runs for the same period.

A Section 14 restricted firearm renews every two years. If you hold one and you are working on a five-year mental calendar, you are already late.
The form: SAPS 517(e)
A firearm licence renewal is made on the SAPS 517(e) — the application for renewal of licences. It is not the same form as a new application, which is the SAPS 271, and it is not the same as the SAPS 517(g), which renews a competency certificate.
The form asks for your details, the firearm's details exactly as they appear on the licence (make, type, calibre and serial number — character for character), your competency details, and your reasons for continuing to hold the firearm. That last part is the motivation, and it is where most renewals come unstuck.
A renewal still needs a motivation
People assume a renewal is a formality because they have held the licence for years. It is not. The Designated Firearm Officer is deciding, again, whether you still have a legitimate need for that firearm under that section — and your circumstances have changed since the first application. You may have moved, changed jobs, married, had children, joined or left a shooting club. All of that is relevant and none of it is on the old letter.
A renewal motivation should say plainly: who you are now, what the firearm is, what you use it for, that you have kept it safely and lawfully for the licence period, and why the need still exists. Keep it inside the section's purpose — see the sections explained — because a sport-shooting reason on a Section 13 self-defence renewal is a contradiction the DFO will spot.
Check your competency before anything else
Your competency certificate for that type of firearm must be valid. A competency runs five years and renews on the SAPS 517(g). If your competency has lapsed, the firearm renewal cannot proceed — fix the competency first, or lodge both together.
This trips up a lot of people whose licence is a ten-year Section 16 but whose competency is a five-year certificate. The competency expired halfway through and nobody noticed. More on competency certificates.
What you need to lodge
- The completed and signed SAPS 517(e).
- Your motivation.
- A certified copy of your ID.
- A certified copy of your existing licence (the white card).
- A certified copy of your valid competency certificate for that firearm type.
- Proof of residential address.
- Proof of safe storage — your safe, and that it is fixed in accordance with the regulations.
- Proof of association or club membership, if you are renewing on Section 15, 16 or 17.
- Two passport photographs, if your office asks for them.
Where to lodge it
At the SAPS station in whose area you live, with the Designated Firearm Officer. Not any station — your station, the one whose precinct covers your residential address. If you are not sure which that is, use our SAPS firearm office finder.
Get a receipt. The DFO must give you an acknowledgement with a reference number. That reference is the only way to track the application afterwards, and the only proof you lodged on time. Photograph it before you leave the building.
After you lodge

While the renewal is pending and you lodged it in time, you are not in unlawful possession. That protection depends on having lodged before the deadline, which is why the receipt matters.
