What a firearm licence actually costs in South Africa
The SAPS application fee is the smallest part of it. Here is everything that actually comes out of your pocket between deciding you want a firearm and holding the licence.
The components

Why we do not print the SAPS fees here
SAPS application fees are prescribed by regulation and change. We would rather tell you to confirm the current amount at your Designated Firearm Officer than publish a number that is quietly wrong for six months. Anyone showing you a confident rand figure for a SAPS fee is either very current or guessing.

The cost people forget
Doing it twice. A refused application means the SAPS fee again, another wait of months, and either an appeal or a fresh start. The commonest causes of refusal — a motivation that argues the wrong angle for the section, a document that does not match, an undisclosed item on the record — cost more to fix afterwards than to get right the first time.
Costs that come back
- Competency renewal every five years, including re-assessment.
- Licence renewal — every 2, 5 or 10 years depending on the section.
- Association membership, annually, for Sections 15, 16 and 17.
- A safe at your new address if you move, plus the SAPS 521(b).
